Because they’re busy doing things that don’t matter.

That could include geotagging images, buying cheap backlinks, or constantly jumping from one goal to another.

So, what are the things that actually matter?

Obviously, it’s the things that offer the highest potential reward. For most businesses, that’s the Google Business Profile. Optimize and manage it the right way, and your biggest asset will work in your favor and become your strongest lead magnet.

I usually work my way down the profit ladder. The more impact a certain tactic promises, the earlier I want to get it done, but done properly.

Here is the list I usually work through to get our clients the highest return on their spend:

1. GBP optimization and management

2. Getting listed on all the major directories

That includes AB, Yelp, Bing, and any other directories you can find on the first three Google pages for your most important keywords and your competitors’ brand terms.

3. Creating individual service, store, or product pages

These usually seem to offer the highest return. The more relevant they are to the core business, the easier it is to rank them and turn them into lead machines.

4. Creating location or service-area pages

Once the most profitable services are covered, I create location or service-area pages for those services as well. These pages are usually filled with different information to target people in those specific areas.

5. Creating individual content that focuses on expertise, experience, authority, and trust

Once the foundation is in place, I move on to creating additional landing pages and article-like content that focus on expertise, experience, authority, and trust.

There isn’t really a single framework that applies to every niche. Not even AI can determine what matters for an individual business unless you start feeding it all the available business information.

And I’m not talking about NAP. I’m talking about every single detail of the business, such as return policies, warranties and every specific case, locally relevant content, listicles, and so on.

Note: Articles should support your money pages. If you create local landing pages about services that Google can’t find any information about online, you’ll have a much harder time ranking them, and that can diminish your overall authority.

6. Running ads

Once we’ve covered all of these areas and want a higher ROI than very thin location pages can provide, we can still run ads.
